Starting today, 21 August 2026, dedicated crews are officially on the ground cleaning, cutting, and maintaining the main entryway into our neighborhood along Walter Sisulu Road—stretching all the way from the N1 off-ramp right past FS Cars towards town.

                    COMMUNITY UPDATE:                            Keeping Universitas West Clean & Safe!

Earlier today in Bell Crescent, the Project Manager of our newly elected Universitas West Neighbourhood Association (UWNA) team intervened after catching two individuals tearing open black refuse bags brought from another area and scattering litter.

Following a firm warning and clear instructions, the individuals placed all scattered rubbish back into provided bags and left the area in squeaky-clean condition.

Important Refuse Reminders for Residents [ When Collections Should Take Place]

1. Waste Schedule & Bags

Please put out household waste only on designated collection days specified by Daphne and your street group leaders.

Always use sealed black plastic bags to prevent scattering.

2. Placement Guidelines (Avoid Street Medians!)

If your property sits adjacent to a road median, place your refuse bags on the pavement directly in front of your house—NOT on the median.

Why avoid the median?

Safety First: The Mangaung Metro (MMM) collection truck collects refuse strictly from the left-hand side of the vehicle.

Dangerous Crossings: Picking up bags left on a center median forces collection workers to cross incoming traffic, creating a severe safety hazard. As a result, bags on medians are often left behind.

Litter Prevention: Uncollected bags left on medians attract street vendors and vagrants, leading to torn bags and widespread littering in our neighbourhood.

UNIVERSITAS REPAIRING THE FUTURE - July 2026

Together We Fill, Together We Succeed: One Pothole at a Time! 

When community spirit meets hands-on leadership, real transformation happens. In Universitas, that spirit is alive, well, and actively making the streets safer for everyone!

The newly elected Universitas West Neighbourhood Association (UWNA) management team recently proved that leadership isn't about sitting behind a desk—it’s about rolling up your sleeves and getting to work. Equipped with high-visibility vests, hard hats, shovels, and asphalt, the team took to the streets at the T-junction of Scholtz and DF Malan Drive to tackle local road repair head-on.

Leadership in Action

Secretary Nomsa, Treasurer Gert, Chairperson Zelda, and Project Manager Eugene led by example, working side by side to fill potholes and restore smooth driving conditions to a key local intersection.

A Stronger Network: Uniting for Universitas

The initiative goes far beyond a single intersection. The Universitas West Neighbourhood Association (UWNA) and the Universitas Park Neighbourhood Association (UPNA) have joined forces in a powerful partnership. Working in full cooperation with civil engineering contractor Raubex and the Mangaung Municipality, these combined efforts mean the entire Universitas road network is receiving much-needed attention and repairs.

This collaborative approach shows what is possible when community leaders, local government, and private industry pull together for a shared vision of a safer, thriving neighbourhood.

Community Heroes in Action: 

A Big Thank You to Johannes, Fanie, and Shaun!

True civic pride is defined by individuals taking personal responsibility to care for the environment they call home. In an inspiring show of local initiative, a private resident adjacent to the Ryno Kriel Servitude, together with his dedicated team, recently stepped up to resolve a major municipal drainage issue in Universitas.

Going Above and Beyond for Universitas

The underground municipal water drainage channel along the Ryno Kriel Servitude had become severely clogged with accumulated trash, plastics, and debris, presenting a major risk for urban flooding and environmental contamination.

Rather than waiting for external assistance, local resident Shaun, along with team members Johannes and Fanie, rolled up their sleeves and got straight to work. Equipped with ladders, tools, and a strong sense of community duty, they climbed down directly into the drainage vault to clear out mountain loads of waste piece by piece.

A Sincere Message from the new management of UWNA

Teamwork Prevails: Quick Response by Bloemsec and SAPS Nabs Gate Motor Theft Suspects in Universitas 

UNIVERSITAS, BLOEMFONTEIN — In a stellar demonstration of community vigilance and seamless collaboration between private security and law enforcement, two suspects were apprehended in broad daylight following an attempted gate motor theft in Universitas.

The incident unfolded at approximately midday on Sunday, 02 August, along Wynand Mouton Street. Quick alertness in the area led to a swift response from the Bloemsec rapid response team, who promptly intercepted and handcuffed the two male suspects at the scene before they could make their escape.

Swift Action on the Ground
Upon arriving at the scene, Bloemsec security officers successfully detained the suspects next to a silver bakkie believed to have been utilised in the commission of the crime.

Officers from the South African Police Service (SAPS) - Park Road Station arrived shortly thereafter to provide crucial reinforcement and handle official procedures.

Key Highlights of the Operation:
Suspects Handcuffed: Both individuals were safely apprehended on-site without further incident.

Vehicle Seized: The silver bakkie used during the alleged theft attempt was confiscated by law enforcement.

Property Booked: SAPS Park Road officially impounded the getaway vehicle, booking it directly into the SAPS 13 storeroom at the police station to serve as evidence in the ongoing investigation.
